Hi

http://dhep.ga/boinc/results.php?hostid=69

I have 2 tasks running on my Mac for several days (received the 05/07 and running together with other projects, sometimes suspended but then crunching again), one has crashed after a reboot / upgrade of the Mac (but not the other one) but I think I have received no new credit during all that time.

Yes, on the todo list.

Hi Jerome, are your boxes visible here: http://www.dhep.ga/statstopology.php#graphene-117.nancy.grid5000.fr ?

If not then try aborting the tasks (nothing is lost by doing this - even if it is working OK)

Hi

my machine is not connecting anymore to the net for the last 2 days and I didn't have time to check out why yet.

But I don't think I'm on that page - I guess I should find my user name in the first column ?

Hi,

Your name is not there.
You only show 1 task running on your machines.
The machine it is on hasn't connected for two days as you say but I am told that the task will still be working and when you can get the machine connected again it should contact the DHE server to report back its progress. I hope that will be the case even though the IP of the server has changed.

Until the machine connects again you won't show on that web page though.

Reboot the machine and it will connect and be on that page.

The next question for Michael DHEP is: Will it be possible for 32-bit applications to be created for this project?

Would be interesting to know what the OS demand for this is? I suppose mostly Windows.

Anyone interested in a 32-bit Mac or Linux app?

Just checking back in to say that all of my noticeable Windows problems here have been fixed. No pop-ups, no lags, normal CPU usage and I can now suspend/resume without lags/freezes. Never had any problems with Linux. I am not running much now but will increase my threads when you start exporting stats. When will that be?

Personally, I do not see any need for 32-bit apps as they are being phased out. I suppose there might be some interest for those running older OS's. I think you will get more results (more participants) if you concentrate on stat's exports.

Good job Michael! Cheers.

Similar experience for me as well, running the 32 bit application now.

Thanks

Finally the 2nd task I mentionned did finish with no error, and was never credited : at the beginning I saw a status "waiting for validation" or something similar, but then it disappeared from the list and the credit was unchanged.

The first one that crashed earlier was never credited neither (and I know it had been running for quite some time, using CPU).

It's really a pity that you purge the result table all the time, there is no way we can refer to any existing task in the past, this is not normal.

And it's a pity that we (I) don't get credited for CPU cycles given to the project.

The WU are "dummies" and mean nothing. You will never be credited for finishing and turning in a WU

The WU contacts the project one time per hour and reports the work it has done during the past hour. That is what gives you credit.

If the WU are dummies, then why is the returndate so short.

This causes Boinc to think that it can't make the deadline and will keep Bonc running in high priority.
It also means that other projects get pushed back.

So if the returndate has no use make the allowed time something like a year long.

Edit: I just found out that you don't use checkpoints.
If host is shutdown en restarted Elapsed Time and Percentage Done reset to zero.
If this is also the case for the internal workings of the WU it will never finish because it is likely that a host needs to be rebooted during the long runtime of the WU.

It's been a complaint of mine since day one. I end up getting the tasks I want, set No New work, suspend any extra tasks I get and let other projects run.

There is a workaround if you are willing to edit the client_state.xml file.

Step 1: Shutdown Boinc.
Step 2: Find and open the client_state.xml file (make a backup just to be sure)
Step 3: Find the section for the project and in that the entry for the result
Step 4: Increase the value for the line "<report_deadline>xxxxxxxxxx.000000</report_deadline>" with 27500000
Step 5: Save the flie
Step 6: Restart Boinc

Disclaimer: You do this at your one risk. An error wil crash your Boinc installation. If you are not confident about editing this file, don't do it.

Hello Henk,

What is the return date on your WU?

It is set to be four weeks and they will end on a goal change, which is usually every two weeks. Two weeks is also the estimated FLOPS time which is well under four weeks.

I suppose there's no reason we couldn't extend the deadline even further than four weeks.

Kind regards,
MIchael

Is was 4 weeks but I have changed it to about a year with the methode I posted.

I do not understand what you mean with goal change? Thus this mean that the server will auto abort the result after 2 weeks?

There is however an error in your thinking. You assume that hosts run 24/7 and that they run only your project. Both are wrong.

I run about 10 hours each day and that time is shared between multiple projects. This means that if it plays nice with the other projects your project will get perhaps 2 or 3 hours a day.

Edit: MIchael, I just read your introduction post. This answers all my questions.
If you increase the returndate to about a year I can run your project without problems.

WUs will be marked as successful at this point and will end. However if they were marked as aborted there would be no practical difference to the science or credit.

Done. (will need an abort and update to get through to the BOINC client).
